Music: The Killers

October 3rd, 2022

Individuals often believe that the art of music can only appeal to one’s sense of hearing. Of course, the tune, instruments, and overall sounds combine to supply the noise that creates a rhythm. This is the crux of a memorable and remarkable song or a static recording. However, a musical performance adds to the weight and effectiveness of music by adding elements that appeal to touch and sight. More specifically, a well-curated performance entices the audience to become part of an experience rather than simply listening.

On October 3rd, I was gifted the chance to see a performance of my favorite band, The Killers in TD Garden. The Killers, an American punk and pop rock band formed in 2001, have been a 21st-century icon and currently have sold 28 million records worldwide. The Killers are mostly known by millennials due to the popularity of singles such as “Mr. Brightside”, “Somebody Told Me”, “Human” and “Spaceman”.

The Killers are also known for their concerts and their focus on performance for their audience. Not only do they accurately portray how they sound in digital renditions, but they also add elements that entice and include fans. For the Killers, specifically, lead vocalist and founder Brandon Flowers, audience participation and experience are what solidify their performance as successful. For example, Flower’s invited numerous fans to the stage to perform alongside him, as well as including background videos that depict a parallel story to the concert and countless lighting, smoke, fire, and confetti effects. As mentioned previously, the success of a remarkable performance is the ability to capture and successfully stimulate multiple senses. For example, not only do Flowers and the rest of the band have great voices, but the numerous lights that beam from the stage provide an enticing spectacle to view from one’s seat.

Overall, the concert provided an enticing, exciting, and unforgettable experience. Not only were the vocal performances from Flower and his team exceptional, but the stage scenery, use of technology, and audience participation combined to provide one of the best concert experiences I’ve had.
